In San Francisco, the hard IRS deadline for a car donation tax deduction is simple: your vehicle must be picked up by 11:59 p.m. on December 31. Scheduling isn’t enough — the tow has to be completed this calendar year to qualify for this year’s return. With AutoBay Alliance, working with Heritage for the Blind, we run pickups Monday through Saturday all December, including the week between Christmas and New Year’s. In most Bay Area locations, if you contact us on a weekday before early afternoon, we can often schedule a same-day or next-day pickup. Call by December 27–28 to confidently lock in a December 31 slot.
Whether you’re in the Sunset, Richmond, Mission, SoMa, Noe Valley, Bayview, Daly City, Oakland, Berkeley, San Mateo, or Walnut Creek, your donation starts with a quick 2-minute form or phone call. You’ll need a signed title, but your car doesn’t have to run — we’ll tow it free of charge. Heritage for the Blind, a real 501(c)(3) nonprofit, uses the proceeds to support people who are blind or visually impaired, and you receive a dollar-500-plus tax receipt for qualifying donations. If you’re searching now in November or December, this is your moment: get clarity on the deadline and secure your pickup while slots are still open.
Your year-end donation timeline
1. Start your donation (2-minute call or form)
2 minutesFrom anywhere in the San Francisco Bay Area, share your vehicle details, location, and best pickup times. Have your title handy if possible. This quick call or form locks in your intent before year-end and lets our team start matching you with the next available tow truck.
2. Choose your pickup day before Dec 31
5 minutesWe schedule pickups Monday–Saturday, including Christmas week, across San Francisco, Oakland, Berkeley, San Jose, and surrounding communities. In most metro areas, we can offer same-day or next-day pickup for weekday calls before early afternoon. Contact us by Dec 27 to confidently reserve a Dec 31 slot.
3. Prepare your signed title and keys
10-15 minutesTo claim a deduction, the IRS requires you to properly transfer ownership. Sign your California title as instructed, remove your plates if applicable, and clear out personal items. The tow driver will guide you through any final paperwork so the donation is completed before December 31 for this tax year.
4. Free tow anywhere in the Bay Area
30-60 minutes at pickupWe pick up vehicles in almost any condition—running or not—from driveways, garages, or street parking in neighborhoods like the Marina, Outer Sunset, Rockridge, or Redwood City. There’s no cost to you for towing, no smog or repairs required, and the pickup must occur by Dec 31 to count for this year’s deduction.
5. Receive your tax receipt and claim deduction
Within 30 days after saleHeritage for the Blind will mail your IRS-compliant donation acknowledgment, and for qualifying gifts you’ll receive documentation for deductions of dollar-500-plus, typically via IRS Form 1098-C. You’ll use this with your Schedule A when you file, claiming a deduction for the amount allowed under IRS rules.
Year-end tax deduction facts
December 31 is the IRS cutoff
For this tax year, the IRS looks at the date the charity takes possession of your vehicle, not when you make the phone call. Your car must be picked up by December 31 for the deduction to apply to this year’s return.
Form 1098-C for larger deductions
If your vehicle sells for more than the threshold amount, Heritage for the Blind will typically issue IRS Form 1098-C. This form documents the sale and value, which you use to support your charitable deduction when you file your federal return.
Deduction usually equals sale price
In most cases, the IRS limits your car donation deduction to the actual gross proceeds from the charity’s sale of your vehicle. Your tax receipt and, when required, Form 1098-C will show that sale price so you can correctly report the deduction.
30-day receipt timing
After your donated vehicle is sold, Heritage for the Blind generally sends your written acknowledgment within about 30 days of the sale. Keep this receipt with your records; it’s what you’ll rely on when claiming your charitable deduction.
Itemizing on Schedule A
To benefit from a car donation, you usually need to itemize deductions on IRS Schedule A instead of taking the standard deduction. Discuss with a tax professional whether itemizing, including your vehicle donation, makes sense for your specific situation.
